If that is the talus field that you are referring to above Copper Park, it's
how we went up last year. Rugged, but what a relief when we got there!
Start at daybreak...

Subject: Re: [Philmont]: Valle Vidal questions
Welcome to the Valle. I have done this trail in previous years. The trek
from Greenwood to Cooper Park is a rigorous hike. As has been suggested in
prior posts, go up Greenwood Canyon and camp past the first campsites you
come to. Between the streams is an excellent area, and it does make the 2nd
day somewhat sorter.
As for what parts of the trail that are missing on the new sectional maps,
it is really not much. It is just some loops on switchbacks that is missing.
If you really want to "see" the trail on a map, you will need to order the
Baldy Mtn. Quad map from the Tooth of Time Traders.
The downhill from the ridge above Cooper Park is rugged, steep and loose
footing. Almost a 1000 foot drop in less than a 1/2 mile horizontal
distance. I suspect that it has not been improved much in the past few
years. Be careful and patient in your decent and you should not have any
problems. Hiking poles will help.
Hope this helps...
