I think what he means by alternative usage is that the deodorant might
normally be used under the arms and use on the feet to stop perspiration
would be an alternate use.
The deodorant might stop or slow feet from perspiring but foot perspiration
is probably a good thing as it would tend to keep the temperature of the
feet in a normal range.
Instead try different kinds of socks until you find a sock weave that is
comfortable in a hiking situation. Change the sock at frequent intervals
and if/when it gets damp or starts to bunch up and rub.
Take plenty of socks so you have plenty of "spare tire innertubes" -- extra
socks require only a minimum additional weight and you are well advised to
see that your feet receive continuous good protection. Good foot care is a
major factor in order to have a successful trek. Wearing an inner sock
along with an outer sock is also worth trying.
An interesting story about Philmont that has some information on
"smellables" is at
http://www.salisburypost.com/2000july/070900b.htm
This story indicates deodorant is not allowed on Philmont trails and
indicates some items which are considered "smellables".
If you do a Google search for ["smellables" Philmont] you will find a number
of useful links which provide information on "smellables" at Philmont.
