There are all sorts of factors that drive dates - Some are local - School
out & College starts in some cases; Troop Summer Camp week(s) and Holidays.
Then there is the Ranch's schedule - my preference being a mid July start
date that is late enough to give the staff time to get up and running but is
early enough that they aren't tired or in the process of shutting down the
back country (last trek leaves base camp on or about 8/8, so every day you
are on the trail after 8/8 camps are winding down). In addition there is
the weather - buggy early, wet later ... or so I've been told .... to this
I'll add that any day at Philmont beats any day in West Chester, PA (or
Orlando, FL I suspect).
In the end you will bid for some dates, you might get lucky enough to get
them but its more likely that you will end up on the waiting list or not get
the dates you wanted. In the former case, its about working your options -
council contingents in yours or an adjacent council might work; or another
back-up venue ... depending on the experience and desire of your crew ...
Northern Tier, Double H or one of the dozens of council run HA areas. In
the case where you are in, but just don't have a date that works for you I
encourage you to engage logistics at the ranch ... they will work with you.
In 2004 this was our case and with a little patience they got us pretty much
where we wanted (needed) to be.

Subject: [Philmont]: Choosing Dates for 07
I am new to the list. We will be going to Philmont in the summer of 07
and need to choose dates. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions, as
to what time is best to go.
thanks
