Our preference for dates is mid June. Normally around the June 15th. This allows for at least 6-7 crews to be on the trail before you and the backcountry camps have a chance to get running smooth (staff is fresh and are excited to see the scouts). The other great benefit for us is that we like to come one day early to basecamp and if you arrive before crews start coming back into basecamp Philmont will allow you to stay in the homebound tent city for two nights. If you arrive a day early after homebound crews start coming in you have to use your own tents in the middle of the two tent cities the first night. Then you move into trail bound tent city for your second night.( You must obtain permission in advance to arrive early). I have found the additional day allows us to better adjust to the elevation difference between Georgia and basecamp. Also by getting there with early dates basecamp is not so crowded since only outgoing crews are in camp ( half the lines- dining hall, Tooth of Time Traders, town, etc).
Of course the only bad date for Philmont is not being there!
