Pete,

0. Turkey bags are a nice thing to have, try them out on your last practice/shakedown hike.

1. Ziplocs are cheap, plentiful and waterproof. You can find them in many sizes (I like a couple 2 gal, and mostly 1 gal sizes)

2. Leave them in your sleeping bag whey you're not in them.

3. I like the PacMoc, but that's just me.

4. You should be able to lick them clean. Lexan is my favorite. You only should have 1, so they are all the same.

5. Lexan spoon (you won't need the others) are excellent. The Lexan-ware in general is excellent, wouldn't use any other.

6. Personal choice, I like the handled these days because I keep blinding my crew members.

7. Didn't look at trek 4 specifically, but Cantinas and the occaisonal trading post pop up on the trail, no more than 5-10 for the crew, maybe a little more for the advisors. You probably won't spend it though, until you get back to base, then you need a lot more.

8. You can buy it at the trading post, if they're in stock, and it may be for the best if you fly (needles). Just your average, run of the mill kit. My son tore the zipper of his zip-off pants before the horseback ride, so we quickly sewed the leg back on so he would be allowed to ride. Wasn't pretty, but it worked.

9. Lightweight!! Aluminum is a good compromise between weight and price. Bring them, not sure if you would have much to select from at the ToT Traders.

10. We had a couple of those multipack spice things, 5-7 spices. Ran out of pepper, onion, garlic, all the spices that would make mom swoon.

11. 1 multi-tool and 2-3 pocketknives. The ranger will suggest, strongly, you only need a couple of knives (mainly for opening the food bags).

12. Probably, but you run the risk that the trail store has it in stock (mid-season should be no problem, but ours was an 808 trek) and you'll have to have money for that (reference question # 7). I think we had 2 large bottles and had no problem (we were close to running out, but did OK).

Good luck on your trek, have fun.

Hi Philmont vets....

Based on the suggestions in the Philmont Guidebook to Adventure, I have some questions about gear.

Regarding the personal equipment checklist:

1. 6 - 12 Ziploc bags for packing clothes. Necessary? Are compression sacks fine, or should one bring the Ziplocks too?

2. Is there a suggested way to pack one's sleep clothes to keep the smells to a minimum?

3. Besides sneakers, are there any particular types of "camp shoes" that work better than others?

Regarding personal eating utensils:

4. Deep bowls? Plastic or lexan materials ok? Is it best to have them all the same for packing purposes?

5. Lexan fork, knife & spoon ok?

Regarding Personal and Miscellaneous:

6. Flashlights - better to have a small flashlight or is a headlamp better?

7. Trail money - For what will the boys need money on the trail? We're doing Trek 4.

Regarding Crew gear:

8. Sewing kit - What should the kit include? Can we just buy it at Philmont?

9. Metal tent pins - What type of tent pin is it? Should they available locally or is it best to buy them at Philmont?

10. Spices - Other than salt & pepper, any particular seasonings that are best to bring? Regular seasoning salt (i.e. Lawrys, etc.)?

11. Is one multi-tool enough for a crew? In personal gear, it recommends each person to bring a small pocketknife.

12. White gas - If we bring one fuel bottle for each stove, will we be able to refill them along the trail or do we need to carry ten days worth of fuel?

Any other tidbits of information you would deem important for a first-time crew to know would be greatly appreciated.
