  Subject: [Philmont]: Gear questions

  Hi Philmont vets....

Based on the suggestions in the Philmont Guidebook to Adventure, I have some questions about gear.

  Regarding the personal equipment checklist:

  1. 6 - 12 Ziploc bags for packing clothes. Necessary? Are compression sacks fine, or should one bring the Ziplocks too?
Use the 2 or the 2.25 ziploc gallon size, water pruff till the bag is torn. Are the stuff sacks water pruff?
  2. Is there a suggested way to pack one's sleep clothes to keep the smells to a minimum?
Put them on just before going into the tent, take them off as soon as you come out of the tent, store in sleeping bag.
  3. Besides sneakers, are there any particular types of "camp shoes" that work better than others?
Dollar store moccasins or what I call house shoes, get branded, anything closed toe and light really.
  Regarding personal eating utensils:

  4. Deep bowls? Plastic or lexan materials ok? Is it best to have them all the same for packing purposes?
Frizbee with 1 gallon NON zip bag over it, no clean up, bag becomes your trash bag.
  5. Lexan fork, knife & spoon ok?
  Spoon only!
  Regarding Personal and Miscellaneous:

  6. Flashlights - better to have a small flashlight or is a headlamp better?
HEADLAMP! you have 2 hands, one of them does not need to holding a flashlight! Just has this conversation with my Asstant advisior this morning. To many things out there require 2 hands!
  7. Trail money - For what will the boys need money on the trail? We're doing Trek 4.
Don't know trek 4, food pick ups have small stores in them if they are open when you get there. Fuel is here also. Extra shots at 30-06 and shot guns. Root beer at one place, can't rememebr where. Only take $1.00 bills on the trail, they are not banks in the back country.
  Regarding Crew gear:

  8. Sewing kit - What should the kit include? Can we just buy it at Philmont?
In the 2 trips for me, only broke a shoulder strap, used shoe sting to reapir. This is something not going this time around.
  9. Metal tent pins - What type of tent pin is it? Should they available locally or is it best to buy them at Philmont?
We use aluminum gutter nails, about 15 cents each at your local gutter supply, don't go to home depot or lowes, they want to much for them, call a real supply whse.
  10. Spices - Other than salt & pepper, any particular seasonings that are best to bring? Regular seasoning salt (i.e. Lawrys, etc.)?
Bring the kinds you and your crew likes, it does help!
  11. Is one multi-tool enough for a crew? In personal gear, it recommends each person to bring a small pocketknife.
1is all we bring, its on my pack shoulder strap.
  12. White gas - If we bring one fuel bottle for each stove, will we be able to refill them along the trail or do we need to carry ten days worth of fuel?
Fuel is at food pick ups, bring $1.00 bills they are not banks. We bring 3, 32 oz bottles, fill 2 at base camp, we let them settle at the camp we are at each night, then pour into the empty bottle slowly to only pour fuel into the bottle, "IF" you have water in the fuel it will stay in the bottom of the bottle being poured out of. DO NOT over pressurize the bottles when pumping them, try only about 20 to 25 pumps. The altitude makes them not need to pumped like at home. I learned this the hard way in 02 & 03. I over pumped them.
Any other tidbits of information you would deem important for a first-time crew to know would be greatly appreciated.
SHIP YOUR STOVES AND FUEL BOTTLES BY UPS GROUND 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE YOU GO TO PHILMONT!!! GET THE TRACKING #, FOLLOW IT THERE!
