I just returned yesterday from a 9 day trip to the Red River Gorge area of the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. It would make an excellent preparation trip for anyone going to Philmont. There are some very tough trails there and water management is very important. We backpacked using Philmont food and techniques. We also canoed the Red River and did some rock climbing. It was an outstanding experienced (albeit very warm). I'd highly recommend it. A very good trail guide is available (which I bought at the end of the trip - I'd recommend the other way around however).

If anyone is interested in more details, feel free to contact me off-list.

thanks
