One is enough until you lose one on the trail as we did in 2004. To that
lucky fellow that found the leatherman on the road to Urraca, congrats. So,
two is better than one and one or two is alot better than 12. Everybody
doesn't need a knife and compass, a couple three pre crew is more than
adequate.

11. Is one multi-tool enough for a crew? In personal gear, it recommends
each person to bring a small pocketknife.
One is enough as long as it has scissors, which are the most useful
component for opening food bags without spilling the contents (and turning
your clothes and campsite into a smellable!) <snip>

I'm surprised returning crews have not said anything yet (one way or the
other) about the switch to MicroPur from Polar Pure (I am assuming it
happened...), or much else, for that matter. On our last year's Autumn
Adventure, we used both. Unless the packaging has changed since then, small
scissors are the choice to open the tablet packages. Many small pocket
knives include scissors - while you don't need more than one multi-tool,
having more than one pair of scissors will be a plus when it comes to water
purification.
