RE Merit Badges:

We incorporated Personal; Fitness, Hiking and Backpacking into our prep
schedule.

PF: The crew all signed up for it 10 months out from Philmont, got a
school PE teacher to be the counselor, who covered all the book learning
stuff in class. We used a group workout regimen in the fall to get in
shape for the real on-the-trail prep hikes in the spring.

Hiking: We had been working on this for 18 months already but had not
decided how to get the 20-in-a-day requirement met. We hadn't expected
to do it the way we did, but a dry spring at the end of a 15 mile day in
our final Phil-prep hike forced us to go 5.5 more miles to the end of
the trail. Ergo, we got our 20 miles in but with full Phil-packs.
Hooah! It was the best sort of crew-bonding experience we could have
asked for and gave us a great benchmark by which to measure "suck" once
we were out at the Ranch.

BP: Starting with our 5 day AT prep hike the summer before Philmont, we
built our prep program specifically around earning this MB. Some
weekends we only went a mile before setting up on Friday night making a
normally 2-day event into a three day, 2-site trek.

The practice you gain packing up gear that you will use again the same
day (instead of shoving it all in to head back to the cars) is
irreplaceable.
