Joe,

I totally agree with you on weekend troop campouts. I have seen more
than one scout in our troop searching for a plate when he forgot his
mess kit. Week long or longer treks are a different environment where
everyone is much more dependent on each other, you are not back at home
on Sunday afternoon, you are working with older scouts, etc.

Phil

I guess I was thinking about the responsibility of making sure you had
your own personal gear, start to finish, kept track of it, took care of
making sure it was clean so you don't get sick, etc.

In our troop, if you don't bring your mess kit to a campout, you're
likely to be scrambling around trying to find a way to eat. We won't
let them starve, but it is their responsibility to take care of the
basic fundamentals.

I think this falls into the ol' "each to his own" category.
