1st - follow the advice of Coop (as detailed in the Philmont Advisors
Guide) keep the crew together and on task when you first get into base
camp. Get all the gear turned in and all the work done, then get showers.
2nd - I really like going into Cimarron after coming off the trail. If you
get up early, hike at a good pace, and get done in base camp early enough
your crew can catch the (free) bus ride into Cimarron, before lunch. This
can be a great motivator - go into town for any of the great "real food"
treats. My personal favorite is the Burrito Banquet. I love the wonderful
home-made salsa and Mexican specialties that the lady serves out of the
little trailer. There are some other eateries with equally appealing
post-trek cuisine. There are several afternoon runs of the bus too, it is
just that the base camp food is not as good as the in-town....so if
possible I like to go early.
3rd - now that the crew has had some of the "real food" they have been
talking about for about six days and they have bought some knives and
souvenirs you can get try to get them to take in some of the local culture
like:
* the Villa Philmonte (if you did not do it before the trek (which I highly
recommend).
* the Kit Carson Museum
* tour the several cool options in Cimarron, like the Old Mill and the St
James Hotel.

You may find that the kids would rather just relax, after they get some
food and snacks.
I try not to push them too hard.

I hope you have great trek!

YiS,
Rick Neff
