Synopsis of Philmont Crew 611-I-1, Trek 4, Part 1

Friday, June 10 - Left DeSoto, TX about 7:30 AM. We had planned to leave at 7, but as you know there is always something to slow you down. Drove 505 miles to Clayton Lake State Park in Clayton, NM (for all of you tour permit police out there, please don't turn me in for going over by 5 miles :-) . Pitched our tents and went back to town to eat, only to discover that the Hi-Ho Cafe closes at 6, so we split between Dairy Queen, Subway, and Pizza Hut.

Saturday, June 11- Up early, broke camp, into town for breakfast. This time the Hi-Ho Cafe was open, but it took them almost 2 hours to get us fed and on the road. Guess they weren't ready for an extra 24 guests, even though they had seats for 75 or more. Hmmm. At any rate, got to Philmont about 10:45, we had planned on arriving at 10. Picked up our Ranger, but there wasn't time to do much before lunch except get our tent assignments. In the afternoon we did medical rechecks (they did NOT weigh us), had some ranger classes, picked up our crew gear (we brought most of our own, the only things we borrowed were bear bags, rope, sump frisbee with scraper, and dish cleaning kit), planned our itenerary, and got our food. They gave us 5 days of food to carry, which was more than we had expected. In the evening were meetings for the Crew Leaders, Chaplain's Aides, and Advisors (at different locations). Following that, religious services. The protestants handed out New Testaments
with the Philmont arrowhead on the front, nice souvenirs, and a nice book for the trail. Opening campfire was rained out, but onlly after we all walked across a ridge to get there during a lightning storm. Somebody in charge dropped the ball there, they should have cancelled it earlier.
