Synopsis of Philmont Crew 611-I-1, Trek 4, Part 2

Friday, June 17 - On to Crooked Creek, mosquitos are getting a little worse. We were scheduled to pick up food at Phillips Junction yesterday, but we decided to wait and do it this morning. It didn't make sense to us to go over to PJ, get food, come back to Beaubien, and then go back through PJ this morning on the way to Crooked Creek. They weren't real happy about that, it seems that one of the ways they keep track of the Treks is by the scheduled food pick ups. But they DID have hot coffee and fresh fruit at the commissary. There was also a Trading Post, but not much worth looking at unless you had lost or broken some equipment. We picked up a 2.5 liter collapsible jug. Had left ours in base camp on the Rangers advice. He said we didn't need them to purify water, since 1 tablet equaled 1 liter. Problem is, when you have to carry it a distance, whether purified or not, you need a bigger container. We raided the swap box at Beaubien for a bit of breakfast, and then
finished at PJ after we got our food. They gave us another BIG supply, enough for all but the last 5 meals. Got to Crooked Creek somewhere around lunch time, or maybe just a bit after, we lingered at PJ too long. An interesting place. On the day we were there, only 2 crews were spending the night. There were cows to milk, chickens to catch, candles to make, cabins to tour, and naps to be had. In the evening had coffee again. (By the way, we're now making coffee every morning, I get up first, start the water, and then wake up everyone else). No campfire program here, but there might have been if there had been more than 2 crews. A spring was available, but tablets were needed. 2 crews were unusual, there had been 9 the previous evening, and they were scheduled for 10 on the following night. Mosquitos continue to get worse.
