Even though the guidebook recommends them, they are optional. The ranch
will provide an adequate supply of micropur.
Your ranger should ask if you have filters when he is determining what
equipment you will need from camping services which includes how many strips
of water purification tablets.
That said its really personal preference, there are sound arguments both for
and against filters at the ranch. I've carried one on both of my treks as
an adult and used it rarely, especially after the intoduction of MicroPur
and the retirement of PolarPure.
