We use the MSR Waterworks II. I have modifyed the pump heads to create more pressure and volume they will clean on each stroke. I have used them since 02. We take 3 on the trail.

  Kevin,

You have opened a can of worms. This is always a hot topic each summer on this list. My crews use the First Need Purifier, and have had very good luck with it. Several other crews at Philmont did not use filters, and sometimes the water was pretty muddy looking.

Personally, I am a fan of the filters, but use them before you arrive, so you know what to expect. We also use disposable coffee filters over the inlet to avoid clogging up the filter.

  I used to a Bobwhite...SR-357, and then a Staffer...SR-439, SR-613, SR-683

    Hello Scouters,

I'm wondering if carrying water filters is a unnecessary crew weight and if thy are essential or nice to have?
