A useful page on water treatment will be found at
http://www.lowergear.com/product-support/aboutwater.html
This article basically suggests that filtration followed by a chemical
treatment
gives the best treatment. Filtration or chemical treatment alone will not
get the complete job done.
Of course the big "IF" is what is in the water to start with. Since you
will
not be doing a thorough test of the water it's a good idea to do treatment
both by filtration and chemical(s).
YMMV,
