[philmont] Ponil Park Ghost town near Ring Place

Ponil Park is approx. 1/2 mile north of the trail that heads west to Sesally Canyon Camp.

The cemetery is located on the east side, in a slight draw that heads towards the east.

There are only a few ruins left of the old town, but there are several embankments and some wooden bridge trusses that would seem to indicate where they loaded logs on rail cars.

Can anyone advise how to get to the Cemetery and ghost town? We will be there and would like to take the side hike.  We will be coming up from the South and then heading on to Whiteman’s Vega. Thanks in advance.

Subject: [philmont] PhilSearch needs your help ...

If you found PhilSearch of use to you planning for 2007, please read and respond to the request for photos, below.

 PhilSearch vB02 - News for June, 2007

It’s been a couple of months since I’ve made any real changes to PhilSearch for a variety of reasons, among them the fact that I’m running out of ideas and I’m working on PhilSearch’s little brother, CCCSearch, a tool to serve as a repository for local/regional high adventure and shakedown opportunities.  You can visit CCCSearch at www.troop6bsa.org?cmd=cccsearch

Now on to the state of PhilSearch and some minor enhancements made over the last couple of months.

You can select the year you want to work in from the list PhilSearch has loaded.  Currently PhilSearch “knows” about 2005, 2006 and 2007.  The current implementation will allow you to select either 2006 or 2007 but not 2005 because the internal comparison logic requires a “year-1” and so I had to choose to either live with this limitation, or, make a slew of changes.

A handful of photos were added, thanks for those.

The Photo Albums needs function has been enhanced to help identify those treks that will have the opportunity to supply them.  In addition some additional photo needs categories were added to identify specific needs in the area of campsites and staff cabins.

Finally the Treks report has been tweaked to also identify campsites and programs that need photo coverage.

As the 2007 season ramps up I’d ask that each and every crew that used PhilSearch as a planning tool and found it valuable commit themselves to giving back.  Even with all the photos that have been added many more are needed.  The list of needs is maintained in the Photo Album.  A pass through the Virtual Tour also provides some clues as to some of these needs. There is no reason that we cannot have 100% coverage of campsites and activities by the end of the 2007 season.  Further the overall quality and depth of information can be vastly improved, please pitch in.   Specifically I need:

Staff Cabin, Campaite & Activity phots as indicated by the needs list located in the photo album

Campsite Map photos - While I hope to negotiate with the ranch for these, I'd like good close up photos in the meantime

I’m very close to releasing the capability to save trek searchs and share them with other crew members, if you are interested in testing let me know.

As always your comments, good or bad, and suggestions are welcome.

Please include the Photographers name, location where the photo was taken, Troop # (including city & state), trek #, expedition number and year so I can include proper photo credit.

Thanks
