We have done short treks in 2002 and 2004. They were 9 and 8 days
respectively and I believe that the shortest trek is 5 days long.
As others have indicated, you do not submit your priority list for trek
selections, instead you submit your desired activities/camps. Unlike the
other poster, I do not remember receiving an advance warning as to where our
short trek would take us. We found out where we would be traveling when we
got our briefing at logistics. (I remember that they gave us all our
selections each year). Both years we had layovers at Beaubien.
I would take a short trek again in a heartbeat, as it seemed to us that we
got more "privileges”; better sites at staffed camps, fewer people at base
camp, fewer people on the trails, etc. In 2002, despite it being a drought
year, we did get to take showers at one of the camps, as we were one of the
last crews going through that camp – albeit the camp was out of propane, so
the water was not heated. When you return to base camp – it’s a ghost town,
and the merchants in downtown Cimarron were almost giving things away as
they were trying to get rid of their entire excess inventory.
In 2008, we're going to have a different experience, as we will be one of
the last full treks to participate that season.
Regards,
Tom Fitzpatrick

Subject: [philmont] Philmont Short Trek
Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2007 13:09:04 -0700
Our troop has been awarded an 8-day short-trek in August of 2008.
My question is this
1) are short treks the same as normal 12-day save cutting days off the
middle?
2) does Philmont assign your routes, or do you get to decide?
3) can someone who has done one of these short-treks please give me some
feedback so I can have the answers for our committee
Thanks
