[philmont] Woodfired Back Country Waterheaters

My memory of our trek two years ago tells me that Beaubien has wood-fired water heaters and showers, too. I didn't partake, however. I waited until Cyphers Mine to clean off a couple inches of dirt and sweat. I just couldn't take it anymore!

As for wood, yes, you have to collect your own firewood. Not a difficult task, however. Lots of branches of all sizes laying around. Didn't take a lot of fire to keep the water warm.

At some camps, good firewood is hard to come by, so to guarantee a good fire, you might want to consider having one person "double-pack". That is, have one person in your crew carry his backpack on his front, then carry a pack board on his back loaded with split firewood from home. One can never be too prepared! :-)

  1. My records indicate Sawmill & Cyphers Mine as the only two sites with wood stoked water heaters.

This kind of information was previously supplied in a table at the back of the "Treks" book along with other facilities. If deemed valuable I could probably re-create it without too much trouble as PhilSearch's database contains this information and displays it as part of the Camp data.

2. They work quite well.

3. I actually don't remember if we gathered the wood or not, I suspect that you would be asked to bring some deadfall with you.

4. Can't speak for time, perhaps a lurking staffer could?

I heard that some of the back country showers have wood-fired water heaters if you want hot water. I have a few questions:

1. Where are they?
2. How well do they work?
3. Do the crews supply the wood?
4. Does it take long to heat the water?
etc.?
etc.?
