While Jim makes some excellent points, thank you Jim, that most of us
are not aware of, in the specific instance of Philmont there may be a
middle ground since we in effect control our own property. Obviously
drought conditions or other environmental conditions make fires
problematic at times, there are times and places at Philmont where
some fires would be of benefit.
The fires of the past few years have given the land managers pause, an
they don't quite know what to do. Fire is good for that
environment..In many campsites the amount of deadfall and trees is
significantly above what is healthy. The act of scouring an immediate
area around a staffed camp could help protect it when the inevitable
fire occurs, at least there could be reduced fuel in that area.
As responsible scouters it is our obligation to use our resources
wisely and preserve them for future use. Making a mind shift from fire
will be very difficult given its almost mystical, if not DNA embedded,
force that it has on people, like young boys and men.
I'll be looking for the solution. Will there come a time in the not
too distant future that we carry "artificial campfires" that we fuel
with our liquid fuel or a simple propane canister?Hmm.... wonder what
a good teepee lay will weigh? Will we discuss the weight /benefit ratio
of the traditional log cabin fire with that of a modified lean too,
all of them artificial and home fuel driven?
Food , or fire, for thought...
