[Philmont] Woodfired Back Country Waterheaters

Wood stoked water heater tip: Take your shower in the afternoon or
evening after the boiler has replenished the storage tank. Most of our
crew in '04 were "too tired" to shower when we arrived at Sawmill. I and
another crew member decided to to shower right away while the rest
waiting until morning. By then they had to relight the fire in order to
heat the boiler. But that did little good as the the huge, several
hundred gallon storage tank in the shower house was ice cold and the hot
water from the boiler wasn't going into the tank until after someone
showered in the cold water in the tank. Brrrr!!!! Lot's of short, icy
showers that morning, resulting in a lot of grumbling. Meanwhile, I was
enjoying the memory of one of the hottest showers I ever taken.

BTW, Sawmill's campsites were picked clean of firewood. Reminded me of
over crowded public park camps. Then later on as we were on our way to
Webster Park, I couldn't help notice the excess dead wood creating a
dangerous fuel load for possible out of control fires. I wonder if there
would be a way to remove some of that wood from areas where it creates
dangerous fire conditions and transport it to the boiler at Sawmill. It
may not have much of an impact on the fuel load, but it may help restore
the Sawmill campsite if crew members have a ready supply of fuel at hand
and don't scour the woods around the camp. Just a thought.

        1. My records indicate Sawmill & Cyphers Mine as the only two
sites with wood stoked water heaters.
