A friend of mine grew up in Idaho where he was taught to lay wood for a
fresh fire in the morning before leaving camp. It's a nice gesture for
the next group that arrives and also serves proof that your pit was out
cold. If a forest fire burns through the site, the underside of the
logs you laid will be unburnt as evidence that it wasn't your fire that
started the blaze.
