[Philmont] campfires

For a fictional account of a 1952 forest fire at Philmont where the hero, Bronc Burnett, had to try to prove that the destruction was not caused by his OA ordeal fire (kindled and extinguished while the Scout was blindfolded in silent and solitary contemplation), see Eagle Scout by Wilfred McCormick. I won't spoil the tale, but it's along the same lines as has been discussed this afternoon on the list. The book is also sort of neat as a well researched saga of a Kit Carson (backpacking) trek of the period. The Kit Carson treks were the first backpacking treks at the Ranch, the forerunner of today's eleven day expeditions. They were instituted by Director of Program George Bullock. This was backpacking in the pre-dehydrated food days.

The Bronc Burnett series was along the same lines as the Hardy Boys or Tom Swift, although the focus was on the sports exploits of Burnett, who hailed from Sonora, New Mexico. In Eagle Scout, however, Bronc attempts to overcome all sorts of hard luck to fulfill his promise to his dad to attain Eagle rank, while serving as crew leader for his gang of sidekicks, who have decided to go to Philmont.

The Seton library has a copy, if you can't find one on ebay or elsewhere.
