Bill:
I highly recommend taking a digital camera. Even at the expense of an
extra battery or two.
I took my Minolta Dimage x50 with me in 2005. The ~700 photos I took all
fit on a single 1Gb SD card. This camera uses expensive proprietary
batteries. I took 3 batteries with me. One was an "official" Minolta
battery, the other two were cheaper (though still pricey) 2nd party
knock-offs. I could probably have made the entire trip with just 2
batteries.
One totally unscientific observation. Another adult advisor in our crew
also took a digital camera. About 2/3 of the way through the trek he
used up his 2nd and last battery. His camera had a lens with a
mechanical zoom. Mine has a digital zoom. My guess is that the effort
required to move the mechanical zoom produced a greater drain on the
batteries. So if your digital camera has a mechanical zoom, you might
want to make sure you have an extra extra battery.
Enjoy your trek!

Subject: [Philmont] Digital camera advice
Friends,
For the last few months I have enjoyed all the advice I have read in
this list serve, and I will try to put it to good use on my first
Philmont trip (Itinerary 13) when I leave this weekend. Thank you.
The one item that continues to vex me is whether or not to take my
digital camera. I am assuming there is no ability to recharge the
batteries on the trail, so I worry about inadequate battery supply. (It
is a Sony camera that requires an expensive Sony battery, not something
I would normally stock-up on.) If you have taken a digital camera and
made it work, I would like your advice.
Thanks again,
