You may get a lot of response on this topic. I have read a lot of
different strategies reported on this list.
Unless you have been doing all of your Philmont training outings with
Philmont food I recommend you take the Philmont food as-issued and
let your crew figure out what works for them.
I, personally do not agree with the idea of opening the food packets
and stripping packaging or off-loading food items prior to using that meal.
My perception is biased by my experience. I have completed three
treks (99, 02, and 04) and am preparing for a trek this summer. My
crews have all been big eaters. They eat (almost) everything provided
and are looking for more. They swap food among themselves and have
occasionally dropped food in the swap boxes. More often they have
stocked up on extra food when visiting the swap boxes.
I am worried about my crew, this year ;-) -> for some skinny, little,
young guys (and gal) they can really eat!
Leftover food was never a problem. Cleaning the pot or turkey bag has
been something fought over, not avoided.
Your crew may be different. In 2002 the other crew from my troop were
slight eaters. They found that they could barely eat 75% of the food
issued. At the commissary stops they turned several packages for each
meal back in right as they were issued. They did this after trial and
error and learning what worked for them.
As for bringing extra - I start with an extra pack of beef jerky and
a bag of Jollie Ranchers (to share).
Seasoning and/or a spice wheel are desirable.
I also bring a bag of candy, like peanut MM's to share with the crew
at a high point during the trek (top of Baldy, etc..).
YMMV
