I would second the concept of taking everything you're issued. You would want the boys to be making those kind of decisions in any event and, unless you're in the very unusual situation where every boy in your crew is going for the second time and already knows which bars, jerkys and sausages he likes and which he doesn't, they're not really equipped to make such choices.
They also won't know in advance how hungry they will get. Also, opening and repackaging the food would take a lot of time, and there's lots of other things to do in the hours spent at base camp. Finally, there are swap boxes at each staff camp for recycling uneaten food (or picking up extra).
Again it's up to the crew members and it's not a case where "majority rules". If 8 guys want to eat less than their issue and the 9th guy wants to take up all of the slack, then so be it.
