I'd spring for a backup battery and take the digital camera. As others have
proposed, turn off the things you don't need and it will greatly extend the
battery life. Check your local Wal-Mart, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc for a
non-Sony backup battery. They're still not cheap, but less costly than the
Sony brand will be. Charge it up before you go and store it in a
non-conductive container by itself. A small Ziploc bag will work.
We have an Olympus Stylus 720SW that we use for things like backpacking. It,
too uses a proprietary rechargeable battery. I used it on an Autumn
Adventure last October, took a lot of pictures and never used up the first
battery. I did carry a 2nd battery for backup, but never needed it. I even
used the display frequently, as the 720SW does not have a viewfinder - a
feature I wish it had at times.

Friends,
For the last few months I have enjoyed all the advice I have read in this
list serve, and I will try to put it to good use on my first Philmont trip
(Itinerary 13) when I leave this weekend. Thank you.
The one item that continues to vex me is whether or not to take my digital
camera. I am assuming there is no ability to recharge the batteries on the
trail, so I worry about inadequate battery supply. (It is a Sony camera
that requires an expensive Sony battery, not something I would normally
stock-up on.) If you have taken a digital camera and made it work, I would
like your advice.
Thanks again,
Bill Reilly
