A candle lantern works pretty well too. Neater, and not as easily
blown out by the wind. I have used one on a number of occasions -
including on training hikes but not at Philmont. Just not worth the
weight and the skies are too beautiful to pass up.

Happy Trails,

As to the candle substitute, yes they can be messy. I have found a
solution that works fairly well for me. A tennis ball canister can be
used to carry a few candles. It keeps them dry and protected from
breaking as easily.

Some people suggest using a small flash light. All of these things
supply the same need which is something for the group to gather around
and focus on. Or as I prefer, just sit in the dark and enjoy the night
sky.
