John,
I agree with you completely.
Our troop uses 4 man Timberlines exclusively: The Outfitter model for the < Star rank since they are learning the ropes and these tents take more wear and tear. The lighter standard model is only checked out to the older scouts that take responsibility to take care of them like they should: no smell-ables/ food inside them - ever, keeping them clean and dry when they are returned to the troop inventory, and always delicately treating the zipper so that it does not fail where bugs would very undesirable, i.e. Boundary Waters, Quetico, etc. Older scouts understand the reasoning to treat them delicately to save a little weight as failure on a weekend car camping weekend is one thing but a failure on Day 2 of a week long trek is a discomfort they do not want to experience. They usually sleep 3/ tent and will sleep 4/ tent based on the crew/ buddy system consensus since treks are all "scout run adventures" with adults only along to make sure proper safety and health rules are
observed.
