[Philmont] Black Bear Attack

Jason, you are getting old. :) The IW (or rather Old Camp) attack was in
2001, and that was the one with vomit by the sump. That bear was killed.

Here are the ones we remember:
1986 was the bad one at Shaeffer's.
1997 was Copper Park, which was semi-accidental, although I do remember
hearing afterwards that food may have been involved.
2000 a bear attacked a youth in a tent on Mt Phillips. Later they found
food in a latrine. Mt Phillips was closed and rangers were used as bait.
:) I don't think they ever got the bear.
Also in 2000, hamburgers were cooked at RMSC and a youth's foot was bit and
another tent was torn up. A ROCS crew at Webster Lake had a youth attacked
(wearing cooking shirt to sleep in) (he returned as staff the next summer)
and the crew had to fight the bear. That bear was killed on site.
In 2003 a bear tore up the inside of Ute Gulch preseason, and managed to
lock himself inside the comm. Ute Gulch Comm ended up with an electrified
building that summer. That bear was killed.
ALso in 2003 the geologist and his wife were in a wall tent at Baldytown,
and a bear stuck his head in.

Those are the ones we remember.
