Bob,
Thank you so much for the article on Colin Fletcher and sharing it as a celebration of his life.
I hold in high esteem, Einar Hansen, native of Denmark, and veteran of the Danish Navy and WWII U S Navy Sea Bees with Soloman Island experience and fondly my Scoutmaster and Colin Fletcher. These two men more than anyone else taught me how to enjoy nature for what it is and to NOT approach hiking, mountain climbing, river running and all the other outdoor pursuits I enjoy as a race with a finish line, but as a journey to be enjoyed one step at a time to the fullest.
To illustrate, my first backpack of any value was a Trailwise by Skihut in Berkeley, CA.. Boots were Itallian Sellas which I got in 1966 and still use. The same gear as Colin used on his California hike. My stove is a SVEA 123. Need I say any more?
Go look for yourself and see what his second trail shoes were.
Fletcher was a master writer, his finest description of "camping out" is of a ladyfriend describing a trist beneath the sheets or rather afterward, as "look, camping out". I'll not tell you what book it's in, you just need to read until you find it. He did it in such a beautiful way that nobody could object to the subject matter in a book about hiking.
Trails are to be hiked, not run with a stop watch. Mountains are to be climbed, not conquered. the out of doors is to be enjoyed and absorbed.
If you haven't read Fletcher, what are you waiting for?
Thank you Einer and Colin.
John LeBlanc
