I was at Philmont in 1986. The bears attacks (I think there may have been two
of them that year) were very much on everyone's mind. They even made us sleep
outside of our tents under the dining flies so we could be "aired out" during
the night instead of catching scents in our tents. The worse of it was that
they wanted us to keep bear watches every night, so our crew divided into
shifts so that someone was up watching for any sign of a bear while the rest
of camp slept. We kept bear watches during the first half of our trek, then
quit doing them. We wanted our sleep.
By the way, from what I heard about the bear attacks, both were caused by
kids being careless and not following the guidelines set by Philmont.
By the way, if you want to read about this trek taken in 1986 check out
