Not a Philmont story but a bear story worth relating.
I am newly married and camping in the Great Smokey Mountains with my
wife on our honeymoon.
We spent our first night together beating on pots and pans to keep a
bear away from our campsite.
I was smug and certain there was no bear. Linda was wide eyed and
alert and insisted I join in the noise making.
The next morning at daybreak the bear was plainly visible several
hundred feet away.
I'm not sure why this bear decided to show up at our door step
but I was impressed very much that my wife's hearing was razor sharp
and could hear him out there.
It was also striking that she could see a trail completely overgrown
in rhododendra by the different hight of the plants over the old trail
compared to the surrounding hill side.
We were lucky that she could hear the bear in the pitch darkness and
that he decided to stay away from the noise of the pot and pan
"cymbals".
