[Philmont] Black Bear Attack

We remember a mama and a cub that took up posts in an apple tree at PTC in
2002. Although that story is a little fuzzy. Anyone with better memories?

Here's a good story from Kevin. In 2001, we both worked Autumn Adventure.
One night Kevin and his crew camped at the Hunting Lodge. Kevin slept on
the front porch (in retrospect, not a good idea for many reasons.) He was
awoken in the middle of the night by a large animal rooting around nearby.
As Kevin reached for his flashlight, (terrified that it was a bear) the
animal grabbed ahold of his sleeping bag and began to pull him off of the
porch. Kevin found his hiking boot and threw it at the animal. He then
heard a loud "neigh!" and realized the animal was a horse!

I often heard a saying at Philmont that went something like: "We don't have
a bear problem, we have a people problem."

And I just got a new North Face Cat's Meow sleeping bag, and the pocket is
genius! As is the fuzzy bit inside the sleeping bag at the foot area...

And thanks to John for bringing up this topic, and reminding all of us that
we need to be "bear aware."
