The crew's 2-night layover was at Beaubien. They didn't have time to hike
Trail Peak.
My guess is that most of the side hikes you read about are by backpacking
crews which don't have to worry about taking care of the horses.
Maybe your experience will be different but none of our past Cavalcade crews
(we've had 4) had much time for side hikes.
One of our guys, who has been invited to return next summer to be a
Cavlacade wrangler, said the crew's wrangler told them that most wranglers
don't want hiking boots taken on the trail. That would make hiking Baldy
very difficult.
You may want to phone Philmont to see if hiking Baldy is really a viable
option for a Cavalcade crew. Bob Ricklefs is the guy to contact. If you
want to try e-mail, send an inquiry to the camping department.
