I might be too picky, but I would only rent a pack at Philmont if I had no
option...
for a couple of reasons...
1. If the rental is uncomfortable (and some are on some folks) it's is too
late to do anything about it. You will not have selection of different styles
to choose from.
2. Packs have personalities and I like to become as "one" with my pack long
before heading out on a long trek. My body needs time to adjust to the pressure
points of the pack and I need to learn how to adjust the pack to maximize
comfort.
Maybe I'm just a wimp, but I like to know my equipment. :-)
