RE: [Philmont]: backpacks

Rental Packs: In the past, Philmont would make available to staff
members new packs and tents at the beginning of the summer for
their use during the camping season. These were the same packs and
tents as were available in the trading post. At the end of the
summer, we were given the option of purchasing them at 1/2 price
or turning them back in. Those that were turned back in went into
the rental pool.

Assuming this is still the method by which the rental pool is
developed, you can assume that the rental packs are of above
average quality and in good condition. I received mine as a
Ranger in 1984, and still have both today.

Pack covers: I have never used one, and always wondered why all
the fuss. If you pack your gear properly (using water-proof
ditties or zip-lock bags for your personal gear, and line your
sleeping bag stuff-sack with a garbage or trash compactor bag and
bring extras of each), why bother with a pack cover?

Pack source: Check with your local outfitters, many offer scout
discounts. Having a live person to help with fitting is often a
good idea. If you are more web-oriented, look into Alps
Mountaineering. Our troop recently purchased a tent from them and
we are please with it. I have also seen good reviews of their
packs here and elsewhere. There web address is
www.alpsmountaineering.com and they offer a scout discount of 45%
off of retail. No, I have no financial interest in the company; I
just appreciate companies that are scout-friendly.
