I want to comment about backpacks for women. Be careful. Especially if
you are purchasing an internal, because this type of pack is meant to 'be
one' with the wearer and conform more to your body. Be sure you check pack
dimensions, not only the recommended length, but width as well. Most packs
are built to fit the 'average' male back.
I am short & stout with a small frame. The Red Cloud was my first pack &
never fit me well - was way too wide for me. I made it work for 2 treks and
near the end of the 2nd one I vowed it would be the last with that pack.
When we were at Harlan around day 9, I would have gladly offered my pack for
the souveniour shotgun blast had it not been for the fact that I still
needed to carry stuff in it for a day or two.....I learned some lessons the
hard way. The Red Cloud does have almost infinite adjustment points, but
the whole thing was plain & simply too big & wide to be comfortable for me.
Especially when loaded - it felt like a tank on my back. Red Cloud is a
very good pack for a lot of people, so if you are an average - larger sized
male, I'd not hesitate to say go for it!
It is equally as important for men to have a proper fitting pack, but
especially thru mail-order I think this is more likely accomplished if you
know your vital statistics & those of the pack you are purchasing. If a
pack is specifically designed for women, then I think it usually fits better
as well based upon what I've heard from other women. Not to say a
non-specific woman's pack won't fit well, it can; you just have to be
careful.
