Since I started the thread (this time around at least), I thought I w=
ould give all of you a final report on my backpack decision for Philm=
ont. =0D=0A=0D=0ABeing basically cheap and also wanting to hike Phil=
mont with as light a load as possible, I was intrigued by the minimal=
ists who said we might be able to make do with our 3,000 c.i. externa=
ls. If I had more experience backpacking, more confidence in identif=
ying unnecessary gear, I think that's the way I would have gone. =
=0D=0A=0D=0AAs the emails continued to come in, I was amazed at all t=
he good advice I received. Thanks to all of you for your recommendat=
ions, links to online sites, etc. I received a wealth of information=
that I intend to share with the other members of our Philmont crews.=
=0D=0A=0D=0AJust as I was set to begin my shopping by looking at on=
line sites, more emails concerning the rental option began to arrive.=
Past renters seemed pleased with their experience - no horror stori=
es were reported. The rates seemed reasonable and I began to lean to=
wards renting. My only concern was the thought of not being able to =
use the same equipment for our practice hikes - having to adjust to u=
nfamiliar packs on the trek itself. =0D=0A=0D=0AThen came the emails=
concerning The Sportsman's Guide special on the Kelty Red Cloud. En=
dorsements from several of you lead me to check it out on the web. I=
was impressed with its features and the price was certainly right. =
(Remember, I'm a cheap one!) So I went with a gut instinct and bough=
t Red Clouds for both me and my son. I can hardly wait for them to a=
rrive. =0D=0A=0D=0AThanks again for all of your wonderful informatio=
n on backpacks. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who profited from the=
collective wisdom of the list, so there's no need for the thread to =
end if there's more good advice out there. =0D=0A=0D=0AYIS=0D=0AMike=
