While splitting the crew is discouraged when hiking from one camp to another, I don't think that the entire crew need go on the same side hikes. Our crew had an experience very much like the one you describe, and trek reports routinely talk about crews sp
litting to make a food pickup etc.
The only caveat would be to keep the group size at least four for safety reasons - two to go for help if needed and one to stay with the injured person, and make sure that each group has the "10 essentials" (water, raingear, first aid, map, etc.) with them
. Your Ranger will go through this in more detail during orientation
