If there are any side hikes that I wouldn't miss for anything, it would be
Baldy. It was one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen (even
better than Phillips). It was even better since we missed a switchback going
up from Copper Park, so we "wandered" off of the property and hiked up a
ravine to the ridge that was connected to Baldy on the NW side. Nice views
from there too!
As to spliting up crews for side hikes. We did split up both times I was
there (2000, 2001) for food-pickups. I asked my rangers both years they said
yes that it is allowed as long as there are 5 or more people for emergency
reasons. So we went with 5 to do food pickups, and the rest set up our tents
and the rest of the camp. And make sure that you understand what the trek
planner @ Logistics tells you, and if it seems odd, ask. We were @ Fish Camp
and had our cons project in the morning, then hike to Apache Springs and
still make a food-pickup from PJ. The guy told us to do the cons in the
morning, goto Apache and set up, then come back down the trail to Fish, head
up to PJ, then come back wia Bear Creek Canyon and said we would get to camp
around 4:30. Do not do that!!! We got left Fish @ 12:30, got to Apache @
2:30, left right after that, got to PJ @ 4:45, showered, got food, left @
5:20 and didn't get back to camp until almost 7:00. Whatever the guy at
Logistics told us was wrong. Others told us to goto our cons, head to PJ,
then goto Apache after we got back that night, and they got to camp around
4:30-5:30. Not fun! Just pay close attention at Logisitics and ask many
questions if it doesn't make sense!
