Good topic
If part of the crew wants to pass on a side hike and you have adequate
leadership, I'd recommend letting those who want to go and those who want
to stay in camp stay.
Knowing that MOST crews must take 100% of their crew where ever they go
makes us revalue some side hikes. I took a boy who was in marginal
condition, cancer survivor. I did not know whether he would make it up
Baldy. If I had known that it was an everyone or no one decision before we
left, I might not have allowed climbing Baldy to carry such weight in our
trek selection. He did fine, we got lucky.
The point is, for MOST crews, a split crew option isn't, so do not use it to
mitigate risks in your planning.
