We stayed at Ponderosa Park our last trail night last summer. The boys
decided to not to go back to Clark's for the campfire. While they played
Capture the Flag I went over to the north-most campsite (don't know the
number), which was empty, and sat alone for maybe half an hour admiring the
view while the sun set, and reflecting on the whole Philmont experience. It
was a deeply spiritual moment for me, and a fond memory.
If you're a first-time advisor, don't be afraid to take a little time by
yourself, away from the boys. You'll do a better job if you allow yourself
an occasional break from the stress.
As for rain: Weather seems to vary from North to South as well. Our crew did
Itinerary 12 the last week of July and first week of August, and we got and
hour or two of rain every day. Our troop's other crew, trekking at the same
time, chose a north country trek and only got rained on about half the days.
