Our troop purchased the Interactive Ranger CD and I was reviewing treks.
Trek 20 is listed as a Rugged (61 miles approx.) on some of the 2001
Philmont trek cross reference sites on the web but on the interactive cd it
totals out as 80+ miles which seems like it would put it in the strenuous
group.

While the TREKS book lists it at 61 miles, the accompanying
Distance/elevation chart shows it as 66 miles, 2004 feet. And it shows zero
mileage for the sidehike of Baldy, where that mileage is usually included
(but not always) in the distance listed for the itinerary. I call the round
trip from Copper Park up Baldy, down the other side to Baldy Town and over
to Copper Park 6 miles, which gets you to 72 plus. The TREKS book calls for
program at French Henry Day 6, which is Greenwood Canyon to Copper Park.
That would require a side hike of about 4 miles round trip, getting you to
76 which is not in the chart (I missed this in my summary of routes that I
prepared last year). The TREKS book also lists program at Miranda for the
Day 7 (the Baldy sidehike) which also is not in the chart - from Baldy Town
down to Miranda and back up is probably another 5 or 6 miles, getting you to
around 82, which I also missed. Which definitely would be more "strenuous"
than "rugged."
There are a number of similar problems with other routes, most in the couple
of mile category rather than 10 or 20.
Troop 62, Winter Park, Florida has posted the TREKS 2001 booklet online at
http://www.bsatroop62.org/Philmont%202001/2001%20Itinary%20Guide/Itinerary%2
0Guide%20for%202001.htm. My summary of those routes, which among other
things attempts to consistently assess the mileage, has been posted by Earl
Owens of Troop 764, Dunwoody, Georgia at
http://www.geocities.com/troop764x/phil_treks_2001.xls (though it was
unavailable when I just tried to access it).
