Echoing the earlier responses, I think this decision (like many
involving gear) will depend on your circumstances. I took a pair of
lightweight binoculars on our shakedown trips and also to the ranch. I
used them some, but *when* I go back, I'll definitely rethink their
cost/benefit payout.
Take 'em on your shakedowns and see how it goes. And if all else fails,
take them with you to Philmont. You can always leave them in your
locker/car.
