Iodine is very effective against water-borne viruses. Crstalized iodine is
the least effective of all solutions (tincture of iodine if you want the
best - we carry Betadine). However, there are pitiful few instances of
water-borne viruses outside of large population areas, and even few inside
But filters are most effective against Giardia and Crytosporidium, which are
the most prevalent organisms that you'll find in our nation's water
supplies.
At the FDA's Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition, you will find the
Book of Bad Bugs... It will tell you more than you want to know.

You will probably not go to McDonald's for a while after reading....
And since I can (I do a lot of things because I can)... Even if you filter
or use iodine, let's read what the FDA says: "Serological surveys indicate
that 80% of the population has had cryptosporidiosis.".... And you thought
it was stomach flu...
We filter, 1 filter per 3 persons in a crew, on all trips. MSR Miniworks
with a .3 micron absolute pore size. Betadine after that if the water is
questionable (only happened once).

Not true that I know. However, you may want to take a look at why you want
to take a filter, when Polar Pure works just fine. Filters can break and
clog. Plus, most filters take at least a minute or more to pump one quart
of
water. Multiply that by 24 quarts for a 12 person crew and you will have
arms like Popeye when you get home. I have a filter that I use when I'm on
the trail by myself. It is quick and it gets the job done. When I go to
Philmont, I use Polar Pure. Just my .02 worth.
