[Philmont]: Water Filters

I'm looking at the 2001 Philmont Guidebook to Adventure. On page 15 under
"Equipment Provided By the Crew" the last item listed is "2 or 3 water
purifiers." On page 27 the Guidebook talks about the importance of purifying
water and briefly explains the difference between a filter and a purifier.
They suggest both filtering (to remove crypto, etc.) and using iodine (to
kill viruses).

That said, on our trek last summer we carried two MSR MiniWorks filters but
found them inconvenient for the reasons others have discussed. The other
advisor and I agreed that when we go again we will suggest to the crew that
we leave the filters home and just use PolarPure.

Current protocol for use of PolarPure at Philmont is add two capfuls per
quart, shake to mix, then turn the bottle upside down and CAREFULLY loosen
the lid to let a little water dribble out, thus rinsing the inside of the
lid and the thread area of the bottle. Tighten the lid and wait one hour
before drinking.

The hour wait is the only reason I might continue to carry a filter -- just
in case someone lets their water supply run out and needs a refill that they
can drink right away.
