In the main, I agree with Bob Klein's remarks. I have a crew going
this summer that is just not going to be a "Gung ho, we're all Boy
Scouts!" type of crew. Neither I, nor any other adult in the troop
can change that. I could ask that some other parent in the troop
speak to his son about showing more spirit, and that parent would
probably ignore me. Even if the parent did do what I want, and speak
to their kid, their kid would ignore the parent.
I should note that on a winter trek (January, Vermont) 14 months ago
one of the boys got sick. Another boy carried the sick kid's gear,
and waited up for him, as necessary. Of the six going, at least four
of them will probably make Eagle. They're good solid backpackers, and
I trust them to function well, but they're also cynical, [they think
they're] immortal, know-it-all teenagers.
