Ok, so what is the real difference in treks? Our crew has sorted through
the list of activities and are now comparing treks. They are deciding
between some that are typical and some that are labeled strenuous. Only one
boy and one adult have hiked extensively (been to Philmont a few years ago)
but they are all 17 years old or older. Will they regret the strenuous trek
or is there really not much difference?. A couple of the strenuous treks
have all the programs that they are interested in.

There is a difference. Every "Typical" trek has its challenges. Rugged,
Strenuous, and Super Strenuous have more - either additional mileage,
elevation change, or both. Without question, a crew will be on the trail
longer each day as the level goes up, reducing both the time and energy
available for program. The paradox is that the more challenging treks also
have greater number of opportunities for program, since they tend to pass
through more staffed camps on their way to somewhere else. But to take
advantage of that greater opportunity requires earlier starts, later
finishes, etc.
A crew of 17 year olds, even with limited prior experience, should be able
to handle a trek ranked strenuous WITH ADEQUATE PREPARATION. With the right
attitude and detailed pre-arrival evaluation of each day's constraints and
opportunities, I would not expect regret of choosing a strenuous trek.
However, if that level of commitment is lacking, looking at the Typical or
Rugged routes may be more appropriate.
