[Philmont]: Awsome 30

I've done what's now called 30 three times: '91, '92, & '00. It's ALWAYS been 80+
miles! I had a huge laugh in 2000 when Doug P. & his new MapTech mileage toy got
juuusssst a little off and measured it @ 60ish. It's a great, great trek, the best
at Philmont, I believe. It sees more and has the opportunity to do more than any
other trek (except 33 which requires aliens to accomplish.) Only the last 2 days are
anything out of the ordinary among the treks above 12. The only other hot spot is
the day(s) you go thru Head of Dean. Getting to HOD, doing the con project, and
getting to Santa Claus takes the whole day. Once done, though, you feel great and
wonder what all the fuss was about. The last 2 days require significant prior
planning. Both Cooper Wright and I have in the past penned long dissertations on
this list about ideas on doing 30. I feel certain that private emails to either of
us would give you more details than you ever wanted to know. 30 works best when your
crew is hiking by 6:30-6:45. Hot water breakfast can usually be done about 30
minutes later, up and off the trail. Lets everyone get packed up, waked up, and
tightened up. I love (as in, still do) each and every one of the other 6 choices our
crews have made with me along and treasure fantastic memories of each; but my BEST
crews and BEST memories were from Awesome 30.
